Boarded Surgeon Required For Busy ER And Referral Hospital, Roanoke, Virginia.
Are you a boarded or recently boarded surgeon who is looking to put roots down in a beautiful area where your dollars go further?
Do you have great people skills as well as surgical skills?
Is your mindset one of growth where you are looking to challenge yourself and those around you?
Are you able to cut both soft tissue and orthopedic cases?
If so, please read on. We think we have a role that you might enjoy.
You’ll be a boarded surgeon with an easy going, even-tempered disposition. (We know surgeons get a hard time in this regard sometimes, but we have had some great ones in the past.)
We have a ready-made caseload, but it will need some leg work to get it going, so we need you to be happy to help build this up with some lunch and learns or evening CE sessions to help people learn who you are and what to refer to you. However, with a referral network of more than 30 practices to our ER, we have a massive caseload ready to go.
You’ll be the sort of person who loves to solve problems, learn and grow personally and professionally, and you’ll have a desire to help others do this too.
You’ll have strong communication skills such that clients and team members love working with you.
We are a rapidly growing Emergency and Specialty Service. We believe that animals and vets
deserve the best chance at a happy, healthy life and our service allows both groups to thrive.
We’re looking for other people who believe and want the same thing as we do and can help us
keep this service running to the high standard we’ve set for ourselves and now develop our surgical service alongside our other disciplines.
We were founded over 20 years ago as a collective of the Roanoke area’s veterinarians to be
able to offer after hours emergency service to their clients. We have evolved into a 24-hour
emergency and critical care service facility. Since then we have continued to work closely with
our referring practices and the local community.
While the care of animals is important, we also recognize that we can’t do that if we don’t care
for our people too. So, we’ve built a practice based on the following values:
1. Being kind to ourselves and others.
2. Respect for medicine and relationships.
3. Being honest and open in our dealings with those around us.
4. Having attention to detail because sometimes it’s this that unlocks a case or makes a client or
5. Doing what we say we’ll do because acting with integrity is never the wrong move.
6. Honoring our teammates because we know that without a shared bond of trust, our jobs get
ten times harder.
7. Making the conscious choice to show up each day and make the practice a positive and
energizing place to be.
8. Having fun.
9. Cake – if you cook then basically, the job is yours. (OK, that’s not quite true, but it would
definitely be a tick in the plus column.)
Your mental health and professional development are also extremely important, so you can
expect us to cater to these things in the form of support and generous CE budget.
Although we are an emergency-only hospital, we have a huge potential caseload waiting to be attended to and a large referral practice base from which to draw referral cases as well as emergency ones.
Being part of an ER service also carries the benefit of having an 24/7 service to manage your cases outside of normal hours for any issues that arise or for pain management.
We work with Virginia Tech for any advanced imaging you may need for your cases.
The ideal candidate must be team oriented and willing to invest time in developing strong relationships with our referral doctors and have good communication skills.
The role involves the following:
Working 4 days each week as our referral surgeon (the days themselves are negotiable).
Seeing clients and assess cases before admission from external referring practices.
Taking over cases referred internally by our ER team.
Accepting emergencies from referring veterinarians on an as needed basis.
Surgery on soft tissue and orthopedic cases.
Giving advice, training and mentorship to our team and also our referring vets from time to time.
Generating reports & invoicing for your work.
Being on call for cases that our ER team cannot handle. – This will be a rare occurrence as they are highly capable.
Being a nice person and making the team around you feel special! (They have to do this for you too!)
Salary and Benefits
Salary will start at $120 – $150,000 or 25% of gross – whichever is the greater.
3% Salary Match to your Simple IRA
3 weeks Paid vacation
CE allowance $2500/ annum plus training days
Board state license
Public Liability and Professional Indemnity
About the Area
Roanoke is a smaller town with a lot of big-city amenities which means the standard of life compared to the cost of living is very favorable.
We have a great indoor arena offering a professional hockey team, Broadway shows and nationally known talent. We have opera and symphony. We have numerous indoor and outdoor music festivals in town and nearby. Because we are based in the heart of the Blue Ridge, Roanoke has become something of a mountain bike mecca. There are other opportunities for the outdoor lover including hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and SUP. College Sports fans can cheer the Hokies on at Virginia Tech, cheer for the Cavaliers at UVA or cheer on the Liberty Flames.
If you are into food and drink, we have multiple micro-breweries, great local restaurants and numerous wineries as well.
All in all, Roanoke is a great place for paying down your loans, having fun or bringing up your family.
If you are interested in being part of the EVS family, please send your resume and cover letter to Dr. Maureen Noftsinger at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Is your clinical skillset rounded out enough to handle an ER caseload without fear?
Are you able to keep a cool head under pressure?
Are you able to make decisions with incomplete information and adapt your plans as things become more clear?
Are you able to reframe failure as a learning experience?
Can you do all of this, heal animals and play nice with your colleagues and clients?
If so, we think you may have just found your new home and we’d love to hear from you.
We would like to hear from you if:
You are an experienced veterinarian with at least 5 years of small animal clinical experience. If you’ve worked in an ER position before that would be great, but it’s not a deal breaker if not. We love teaching people and will bring your skills up to speed.
You are emotionally intelligent – you’ll be responsible for clinical care of the patients of course, but also of making sure client needs are met, referring vets are up to date and team harmony is maintained. So, the need to work well with people and handle tough conversations as well as the good ones is paramount. You’ll have several years of HR experience and subscribe to the servant leadership model
You’ll enjoy the high intensity and variety that veterinary medicine can throw at you. And thrive in a role where you are the difference between life and death for many of your patients.
You are resilient AND tenacious – veterinary medicine is demanding, but it is super important to us that we are creating a workplace where people can thrive. To that end, if you struggle with fast-paced, high pressure environments, then don’t apply. We’re nice and we’ll care for you, but being an ER vet can be a tough gig. We do not want to break you if you’re not a good fit. So, you have to have the mental judo skills to bend, rebound, learn and improve.
You are a stand out communicator – you’ve learned that listening to and empathizing with others is important in almost all situations.
You are a good negotiator – because sometimes it’s not about making people happy at all costs, it’s about finding a win-win that everyone can live with and move forward in harmony. You can accept that sometimes as vets, we don’t win, and we can’t fix everything. And that’s OK.
You trust your instinct when required but are prepared to change your mind when new information points in a different direction.
You are coachable and understand the value of good feedback. Speaking of which, you’re probably a tiny bit nerdy and love getting your feedback in the form of data.
We are a rapidly growing Emergency and Specialty Service. We exist because we believe that referral care can be done better for everyone.
